Parent Expectations

Our objective is to develop players to be confident on the field and to progress overtime by attempting theories and skills learned in training. We want players to be able to think for themselves on the field and be able to make decisions in the moment.

To accomplish this, players need an immense amount of support and encouragement. Making that initial attempt at a new skill is most of the battle! Encourage them to continue to try, even after a moment of failure, and praise them when they try or succeed. Additional avoid providing direct instruction to players during play. If a player is always told what to do on the field, they will always look to someone to tell them their next step rather than learning to think for themselves and make decisions based on the play.

  • Motivate and encourage players by:
    • Cheering for what they did or attempted to do.
    • Praising hustle and recovery, especially when they lose the ball and don’t give up on it.
    • Asking them to try it again, letting them know they can complete it the next time.
    • Encourage the player to challenge an opponent rather than backing away.
    • Prompt the player to think about the different choices they could use in a given scenario.
    • Discussing the positive notes from each game afterwards.
  • Avoid instructing by:
    • Not telling them to run back, pass, shoot, etc.
    • Not calling them out for not giving it their all.
    • Not discussing failures and what the game play should have been afterwards.
